The Karaoke Experience

Today's post is about KARAOKE. For years I wanted to attend one and experience what is like to be on stage and sing your favorite songs.

Many many people wonder how are the karaoke nights at these conventions.

Not ALL have them actually, but most always had and still have.

I had my first experience in DLC4, and I signed up in their Facebook group to sing - "The Show Must Go On" by "Queen". In DLC5 they chose not to host a karaoke, but they ended up opening space for it on a Saturday, free entry, since Rob had canceled the con, we didn't have the concert anymore. For the People's Convention, you used to pay 20€ to attend.

In some events, karaoke is free, in others, you pay for entrance.

In Creation and Purgatory, I didn't pay for karaoke entry, since it's included in your pass.

In my recent convention - Basingstoke Comic Con, they just hosted the "Louden Swain" gig. Comic cons are slightly different from tv show-related cons. They're broader, and chaotic, and focus on many tv shows and universes at the same time.

For Creation, I signed up on Friday after the morning panels. They had a table and announced on stage when they started a game (during the interlude), that the sign-up for Karaoke had started. I could write two songs, and at night they called my name and I sang "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" in ATLANTA ha! Well...they shuffle the names and pick up. So it's ALWAYS random in every con.

DLC4, I didn't have the same luck - my first con so I was a newbie. I was actually disappointed because I wanted to sing, and they chose another Queen song. That convention had a few flaws...very disorganized. But it was my first one...so it will always be special.

Now...Purgatory... was the best one so far (apart from Creation). I had the luck to sing as well. The song was "Zombie" by the "Cranberries". Epic voice, and apparently I made it justice, but I wasn't alone like in Creation ATL (where I felt I was giving my own show), I was on stage with 2 or 3 girls.

This night lasted 3 hours. The next morning my throat was like...I need a break from talking. Usually karaoke nights last one hour...but Purgatory Con sure knows how to rock it!

Also extremely important:

There is always a GUEST, that is responsible to organize and host the karaoke!

Matt Cohen, Sachin Sahel, DJ Qualls, David Haydn Jones, and Gil McKinney are the masters at these nights...I always have a blast - STILL didn't meet Matt, but I can vouch for the rest of the team :)

What can I say? You will have a blast. Music is part of my life since then. It's my BIGGEST source of inspiration. If I may share with my readers...being a singer in a rock/country band was always my BIGGEST dream. Since...I was a kid. But I don't have time currently to have singing classes, I had to give up on that. My life is too busy and chaotic in a good way ...I can't fit more :)

An important thing about karaoke is, they are MOSTLY almost themed. At least in Creation they always are! In Atlanta "Space" was the theme. So you can dress up for the party. Not mandatory of course. But if you like that, you will have fun picking the most perfect outfits.

When I was watching Youtube videos about these events...the first con that showed up was...This epic karaoke night at Vancon in 2012:

I wanted to be there so bad. Mark told me that story in person in our interview.

I think Rich really got him hammered ha!
