Questions at Panels

There is always this topic around conventions because people who attend the same type of convention for years frequently come across the same questions to the same actors, well newbies don’t fault that, honestly, maybe they don’t watch panels or (some you can’t find). They are doing it without knowing this fact: Some questions are the most asked because they’re fun and easy to do.

The trick that I do when I start to ask questions is to ask stuff that makes them think, or different stuff, even just pointing out something of a project they did recently, there is a lot one can do. Even singing counts!

Here is a list of some tips that can help you out:

  1. Be prepared: Listen attentively to the panelists and take notes if necessary. Formulate your question based on what's being discussed. Make sure your question hasn't already been asked or answered.

  2. Keep it concise: Panels often have limited time for audience questions, so make sure your question is clear and to the point. Avoid long preamble or background information.

  3. Stay on topic: Make sure your question relates to the theme or topic of the panel. Don't ask something completely unrelated or off-topic.

  4. Be respectful: Avoid confrontational or aggressive language. If you disagree with a panelist, frame your question respectfully and courteously.

  5. Encourage discussion: Ask open-ended questions that allow panelists to share their insights and opinions. Questions that start with "What do you think about..." or "How do you feel about..." often lead to more interesting discussions.

  6. Avoid yes/no questions: Questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no don't typically lead to meaningful discussion. Instead, ask questions that prompt panelists to elaborate on their views or experiences.

For specific types of questions that work well at panels, depending on the topic and the expertise of the panelists. Here are a few examples:

  1. Clarification questions: If you need more information or clarification on something a panelist said, don't hesitate to ask. Others in the audience likely have similar questions.

  2. Personal experiences: You can ask panelists to share personal anecdotes or experiences related to the topic. This can add depth and authenticity to the discussion.

  3. Future trends: Ask panelists about their predictions or insights into future trends related to the topic. This can spark interesting discussions about the direction of the field.

  4. Challenges and solutions: Inquire about the biggest challenges facing the industry or field discussed in the panel, and ask panelists to share their thoughts on potential solutions.

  5. Audience engagement: You can also ask questions that encourage audience participation, such as polling the audience or soliciting opinions on a particular issue.
